Liverpool Defeat City and Sealed the English Shield Title

Liverpool Defeat City and sealed the English Shield title; Liverpool claimed the English Community Shield title by beating Manchester City 3-1, Saturday at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.

Liverpool took the lead in the 21st minute through Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Argentina’s City debutant Julian Alvarez leveled the score to 70 after entering a 12-minute substitute.

In the 83-minute, Egyptian star Mohamed Salah scored the second goal from the penalty spot, and seconds before the end, the Uruguayan added another Reds debutant Darwin Núñez III to the 94.

This is German manager Jürgen Klopp’s first title in the English Federation Shield with Liverpool and 16th overall for the Reds.

According to Opta, Darwin Nunez is the fourth player to score on his Liverpool debut under Jurgen Klopp, after Sadio Mane, Salah, and Van Dijk.

Mohamed Salah also contributed more directly to Liverpool’s 13 goals against Manchester City (8 goals and 5 assists) than against any other team.

His eight goals against Manchester City from 2017-2018 are the most by any other player against City during this period.

Liverpool was level with Arsenal for the title, with Manchester United holding the record for wins with 21 title.

In contrast, City failed to win the Shield for the seventh time in its history, and for the third time in the last five years, after winning in 1937, 1968, 1972, 2012, 2018, and 2019.

The conflict between the new arrivals in Norwegian City was financed by Erling Haaland and Liverpool Nunez, for the latter, who caused a penalty and scored his side’s third goal.

In contrast, Haaland did not show a dangerous goalscorer with his former German side Borussia Dortmund, only injuring the post in the sixth minute of injury time for the second half.
