Nadal announces withdrawal from Wimbledon semi-final

Spain’s Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that he was withdrawing from the Wimbledon tennis semi-finals against Australia’s Nick Kyrgios due to injury.

The Spaniard suffers from a seven-millimeter abdominal muscle rupture, with the Spanish matador saying at his media conference that he had been thinking all day about whether to play but that he had taken the decision to withdraw to avoid aggravating the injury.

Nadal had received medical time off for treatment during the quarter-final match against Tyler Fritz of the United States after feeling aches in his abdominal muscles.

With this decision Kyrgios crosses into the closing match, qualifying for the final scene of a major tournament for the first time in his career.

Spanish reports earlier in the day indicated that the Matador was determined to play their match against Kyrgios to continue their ambitions to win the third Wimbledon Grand Slam, for the third time in his career after 2008 and 2010.
